What Is a Beer Burro?
A beer burro is a friendly donkey that carries beverages or small favors in specially designed panniers during an event.  While the name says "beer burro," they can also carry bottled water, canned cocktails, soda, wine, champagne, or other individually packaged items.

The burro is accompanied by a professional handler throughout the event, ensuring both guests and the animal remain safe and comfortable.

For many guests, meeting the burro becomes one of the most memorable moments of the celebration.

How Does a Beer Burro Service Work?

Every company has its own process, but a professional service generally follows these steps.

Before the Event
We'll discuss your timeline, venue, guest count, beverage choices, and any custom décor you'd like.
We'll also coordinate with your planner or venue so everyone knows exactly when the burro will arrive.

Arrival
The burro typically arrives before cocktail hour.
This gives us time to unload, let the burro settle into the environment, decorate the panniers if needed, and prepare the beverages.

Our goal is for everything to be ready before guests arrive.

During Cocktail Hour

The handler guides the burro through the designated area while guests are invited to take a beverage from the panniers.

The handler stays with the burro the entire time.
Guests are welcome to:
  • Take photos
  • Pet the burro (when appropriate)
  • Ask questions
  • Enjoy the experience

After the Service
Once cocktail hour is over, we quietly pack up and head home, leaving you with plenty of photos and happy guests.
What Does the Burro Carry?
Beer burros typically carry:
  • Beer
  • Hard seltzers
  • Canned cocktails
  • Soda
  • Bottled water
  • Champagne splits
  • Wedding favors
  • Programs
  • Small gift bags
We can also customize the experience to fit your event.

Is a Beer Burro Right for My Event?

Beer burros work especially well for:
  • Weddings
  • Cocktail hours
  • Corporate events
  • Grand openings
  • Anniversary parties
  • Birthday celebrations
  • Fundraisers
  • Ranch events
  • Western-themed celebration
They may not be the best choice if:

  • The event has unsafe footing.
  • Guests will be heavily intoxicated before the burro appears.
  • There are fireworks or extremely loud surprises planned nearby.
  • Weather conditions would compromise the burro's welfare.
A reputable company will tell you if your event isn't a good fit.
How Long Does a Beer Burro Stay?
Most appearances last around one to two hours.
This provides plenty of time for guests to interact with the burro while respecting the animal's energy and comfort.

What Happens If It Rains?
Light, intermittent sprinkles are generally not a problem.
However, prolonged rain that leaves the burro and handler soaked isn't enjoyable for anyone.  Guests naturally seek shelter when it's raining steadily, making the experience less enjoyable while increasing the risk of slippery footing.
For that reason, professional companies should have a clear weather policy that prioritizes safety and animal welfare.

Can Children Pet the Burro?
Usually, yes.
Burros are naturally curious and often enjoy gentle interaction.
Children should always be supervised, and the handler will guide guests on the safest way to approach and pet the burro.

Are Beer Burros Safe?
Yes, when provided by an experienced company.
Professional handlers understand donkey behavior and monitor the burro throughout the event.
Safety depends on:
  • Proper training
  • Calm handling
  • Appropriate guest interactions
  • Suitable event environments

Questions You Should Ask Before Booking

Not all beer burro services operate the same way.
Here are a few important questions worth asking.

Are you insured?
Professional companies should carry commercial liability insurance and be able to provide a Certificate of Insurance if requested by your venue.

Does the handler stay with the burro?
The answer should always be yes.
A beer burro should never be left unattended.

How are your burros trained?
Look for thoughtful, patient training that prepares the animals for crowds, music, photography, unusual clothing, and busy event environments.
Training should build confidence—not rely on fear or force.

How much experience do you have?
Ask how many events they've completed.
Experience helps ensure smooth logistics and gives the handler confidence in a wide variety of situations.

Can you customize the decorations?
Many companies offer floral arrangements, seasonal décor, or colors that complement your wedding theme.

How to Choose the Right Beer Burro Company

A beautiful burro isn't the only thing that matters.
Look for a company that values professionalism just as much as presentation.
Signs of a great company include:
  • Prompt communication
  • Clear contracts
  • Insurance
  • Professional appearance
  • Well fitted tack and gear
  • Experienced handlers
  • Healthy, well-cared-for animals
    •  are their eye, coats, and hooves shiny & healthy?
    • Does the load they are carrying seem appropriate for the size of the animal?
  • Positive reviews
  • Transparent pricing
  • Current coggins testing to ensure the animal is disease free
  • Brand inspection certificate to prove animal is allowed to cross county lines (if applicable)
  • Bum bags

How far in advance should I book?
Popular wedding dates often book many months in advance, even up to a year in advance, especially during Montana's summer and fall wedding season.
